The news about Sony placing a ban on Hackers for life was for some a black eye on Sony and a pleasant and long waited surprise to others. But most recently on Engadget.com it was uncovered that hackers have found a way to remove the ban on their PS3's and ban another PS3 in their place.
With the whole Hacker issue it made want to ask the internet "What type of Hacker are you? What I mean by this, I categorize Hackers in two groups (in reference to the PS3 hack)- hackers to unlock functionality, or hackers for cheats and achievements. For myself, I have not hacked my PS3, but I am for hacking to unlock functionality. I play Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 for the PS3, and this is the best example of showcasing people the hack for cheats and achievements. These people are killing the competitive nature of online gaming with hacks that require no skill what so ever! I have personally been through games where you are dying before you even enter the game, or have a person land a nuke with one click.
Now there is another side to hacking purely for the ability to activate more functionality which I do support like rooting a android phone to give more options. The whole point of this is give people more choices on hardware they are purchasing like putting windows 7 on a Macbook pro or linux on your PC.
Unfortunately the ban by Sony is a combination of these two hacks. We don't know if Sony will truly be able to stop these hackers or if they will embrace the open source community to repair issues in there system, only time will tell! But from a personal PS3 user and lover of open source projects I hope Sony does embrace open source but stops hackers that have no skill and just hack for achievements.
