iPad 2 is here! Is it time for a tablet?

Apple finally has introduced the iPad 2 and now the main question is, is it time to get an tablet, No! In this post I'm going to break down what other tablets are available, tablets coming out soon, and reason why you may not want an Apple iPad 2.

First off let's just be clear, I myself am in the market to get an tablet to replace my current netbook that currently is the primary computer for my wife and 7 year old daughter. There main uses are; internet gaming (flash based), youtube videos (Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Gummy bear song for youngest daughter 2years old) and korean drama's. With all of this by itself those that know the tech specs would say that the iPad 1 or 2 would be excluded from options due to Apples unwillingness to accept Adobe Flash player on the iPad. This is not necessarily true due to Apple's apps that help emulate access to some of these sites, like youtube which is a well known flash site. To help people that may be confused at this point this would reference Farmville/Cityville, and many sites that display video as an example use flash, now back to the post.

Now onto reason the why the iPad 2 is new and back in the game, not that they were out of it. The iPad 2 is lighter, thinner (thinner than the current iPhone 4) and quoted by Apple as being 9 times faster than the first generation iPad. The iPad 2 now has 2 camera's in total, one front and one back (both for video chatting), and now has a HDMI output option but requires an adapter. It still retains a 9.7 inch screen and a Dual Core A5 processor. Also, Apple has also added some other their desktop software such as Garage band and iMovie which are a nice additional to some already great app line-up.

Now onto the competition. The current competition to the iPad 2 is the Motorola Xoom (pronounced zoom) this is the only one currently, not including the Samsung Galaxy tab since we are mainly comparing to the iPad 2 and it's main competitors. Other competitors that are arriving soon are The HP TouchPad, and the Blackberry Playbook. These tablets will have the dual core processing but only have a 7inch screen.

The main advantages to all of these other tablets (even the ones not yet released) over the iPad 2 is a more open enviroment. What I mean by this is that these tablets will not require proprietary cords such as power cords and media transfer wires. All of the other tablets will have microUSB ports and SD card slots and they all have the main component, Flash!

Though all these tablets are great and have items that give them an advantage over the iPad 2 there is still disadvantages to each one. For the Motorola Xoom it's mainly the pricing as the 32gb 3g/4g model cost $799, there is still a wi-fi edition to be released at $599 but that has yet to be released. The HP Touchpad has not yet been given a release date and only comes with a front facing camera but does show promise. The Blackberry Playbook is the smallest of the groups and also utilizes a new untested OS that is a separate OS from their current phone OS. Alongside all of these pitfalls these tablets are still playing catch up with the Apple App Store which does help give the iPad an advantage over all others.

Now for me the fact the iPad 2 doesn't support flash it loses points, but that honestly is the only factor that makes me hesitate. The market for tablets is still very new so if you have patience and can wait I would recommend waiting until at least June because the market will have more options and pricing may come down due to Apples price cut to the first generation iPad. I hope this has helped you in making an informed decision before throwing down $400- $800 on a tablet, because in these hard times money is tight.
